FencingCategory: Indoor Chairperson: Joanna Phay Contact Number: 91790391 Email Address: joanna.phay@gmail.com Website: http://sg.geocities.com/nusfencing/index.html Description Fencing is the art of armed combat involving cutting, stabbing, or slapping bludgeoning weapons directly manipulated by hand of European origin. Currently, the NUS Fencing Club offers all three weapon types: foil, épée and sabre. Foil is a light thrusting weapon and the valid target area is restricted to the torso. Épée is a heavy thrusting weapon but the valid target area covers the entire body. Sabre is a light cutting and thrusting weapon. It is the more different weapon compared to the other two, since its main attacking move involves slashing and the valid target area involves the torso, head and the upper limbs, excluding hands. Members of fencing are given good drilling and coaching in their footwork and handwork. Frequent bouts are held for members to put what they have learnt into good use and polish on their skills. While fencing is a martial arts sport, it is nowhere violent or bloody. Instead, it is a sport requiring not just perfection of skills and techniques, but also a sport pitting 2 individuals in their speed, quick thinking on the feet and poise. Being European in origin, fencing also reflects European etiquette and decorum, making it one of the most graceful sports to be featured in every modern Olympic game. Normal training dates and times: Tuesdays: 6.30pm to 9pm Thursdays: 6.30pm to 9pm Both training days are conducted at MPSH 6. |
