Description
国大南华派NUS Nam Wah Pai Martial Arts Club (NUS NWP) – A club formed with the aim to promote good health and to teach the art of self-defense. Our martial arts integrate the essence of five major schools: Taiji, Xingyi, Bagua, Northern and Southern Shaolin and Eagle-claw sects. NUS NWP is affiliated to World Nam Wah Pai which was established in Singapore since 1964. To date, many branches have been established in Singapore, New Zealand, Australia, West Germany, Taiwan, Malaysia, and etc.

Our specialty is Qigong (Chi Kung). Qigong comes from the Chinese words "Qi" meaning "Energy" and "Gong" meaning "work" or "practice". It is a term that describes a unique Chinese exercise system that focuses on cultivating and attracting "Qi" from the surroundings. Through individual effort, practitioners improve their health and prevent illnesses by combining discipline of mind, body and the body's "Qi" (vital force). Qigong draws on many elements. It includes (1) regulating the body through posture; (2) regulating the mind through quiet relaxation and concentration of one's mental activity; (3) regulating the breath, self-massage and movement of the limbs. Practicing Qigong ensures better blood circulation, stimulates specific acupuncture points which help to enhance the body immune system. Its recuperative effects include preventing cardiac disorder, high-blood pressure, rheumatism, arthritis and inflammation of the joints.

Our curriculum
Students of NUS NWP will learn the following:
(1) Basic kicking and punching
(2) Various stances (horse stance, arrow stance, etc)
(3) Katas/Forms (such as GongLi Quan 功立拳)
(4) Weapons (ranging from short stick, long cudgel, spear, saber, dagger, sword to three-sectional staff)
(5) Self-defense techniques (such as throwing, sweeping, joint locks, elbow and knee thrusts, etc).
(6) Chin-na (the art of holds and releases)
(7) Semi and Full contact sparring
(8) Qigong,

Students will also have chances to apply the skills which they have mastered in our annual free sparring competition held in February/March.

We adopted the belt grading system and it ranges from white, green, yellow, red, blue, brown, purple to finally black. It takes one about three years to graduate with a black belt.

Many may think that the greatest achievement of any martial exponent is the ability to attack or having the optimum striking power. However that may not be true. The technique of attack and defense is not yet a complete system in martial arts. The system is only complete with the ability to harness inner power to withstand blows as well as the striking power to attack. And this is what NUS NWP provides for - Qigong. During training, we will be guided on how to direct our internal energy-Qi to various parts of our body such as abdomen, arms, back and throat, to build power and prevent injuries.

To experience the essence of Chinese martial arts, join us at MPSH2 every Saturday, at 2pm.
