Kendo developed from traditional techniques of Japanese swordsmanship known as kenjutsu. Kendo is a physically and mentally challenging activity that combines strong Martial Arts values with sporting-like physical elements. Practitioners of Kendo are called Kendoka, meaning “one who practises Kendo”, or Kenshi, meaning “swordsman”. Kendo is not merely about winning, nor is it only about the perfection of one’s techniques. Kendo is also very much about the cultivation of qualities such as discipline, etiquette, humility, and respect for others. Ultimately, you have to decide what Kendo is to you. What Kendo is to you is what Kendo is – nothing more, nothing less. Our members start off training by practising basic footwork drills, followed by cuts, exercises and attack and defence techniques. Training sessions are usually ended off with a free sparring session amongst members. Joint trainings with affiliated clubs, such as NYP, SMU and Singapore Kendo Club, are also held from time to time. Our trainings are on Mondays and Fridays 6:30pm – 8:30pm. NUS Kendo Club is not merely a club; it is also one big family – on top of training together, we often go out for supper sessions and outings as a group. |
